Atlanta Seniors: Learn How to Relieve Arthritis Pain in Just 45 Minutes a Week

When it comes to exercise and staying active to maintain optimum health, seniors are no exception! However, for Atlanta seniors who are fighting arthritis pain, getting an adequate amount of physical fitness can be troublesome.

Thankfully, the most recent recommendations ease back on the intensity of activity for mature adults with arthritis, showing that as little as just 45 minutes of physical activity every week is sufficient to achieve and keep a high level of functionality – and much less overwhelming for individuals who have a tendency to steer clear of exercise.

As stated by Northwestern University professor Dorothy Dunlop, “For those older people suffering from arthritis who are minimally active, a 45-minute minimum might feel more realistic.”

Despite having these scaled-back recommendations, sadly, as few as 10% of aging adults being affected by the difficulties of arthritis are achieving this level of activity. However, people in a recent study who attained the 45-minute level of moderate exercise each week demonstrated an incredible 80% increase in sustained or improved functionality over a 2-year period of time, compared to people who were less active. And it was concluded that although any amount of exercise is better than none, the 45-minute per week guideline is optimal.

Needless to say, always check with the senior’s physician before beginning or adjusting any activity or exercise program. With his or her authorization, a great place to get started is with the Arthritis Foundation’s app, Walk With Ease, that features goal-setting, progress-tracking, a handbook and sample online videos in order to show the exercises. Setting aside designated times daily for physical exercise, and making it a priority, may help ensure activity becomes an ingrained routine and increases the possibility of its success.
